Averil MacGillivray

Averil MacGillivarySince the early 90’s I have worked in enterprise, firstly as MD of my own business. I was solely responsible for all aspects of the running of the business from conception. I did all the administrative work personally with the help of an accountant to present the annual accounts. When I came up against something that I was not familiar with I sourced appropriate training. When I made mistakes I learned from them and took measures to correct them.

At PLC I worked as a Social Enterprise Case worker with a portfolio of 8 projects. Most of these were art based SE’s and I met with them regularly to help establish and promote their businesses, identify barriers and help them overcome them by sourcing mentors or training. Part of my job was to ensure that they were ‘retail ready’ before each market held by Artsmix.

My post at Milun Women’s Centre began as enterprise specific and during my time at MWC I have supported 250 businesses through ‘Sharing The Success’, working with new start up business women and potential incubatees wishing to test trade from Milun Women’s Centre. Helping them to identify & promote their skills and assess training needs and implement necessary support. Many of those women have gone on to establish their business and some have decided that after test trading or workshops that they no longer wish to go into business, but had the opportunity to find out.

As Business Development officer with Hooner Kelah, I have the opportunity to further develop MWC as a business support centre for women but also to help develop a ‘one stop shop’ women centre for all women which will offer the existing services accessible through both organisations and work in partnership with other organisations who support women.

I also sit on the board for West Yorkshire Wellbeing, a social enterprise established to bring affordable alternative treatments to an inner city community.
